What is thermal oil?

Thermal oils or thermal fluids are heat transfer media that are used to transfer thermal energy in those applications or processes where high temperatures are required.

One of its main applications is transmitting heat from the industrial burner boiler or industrial biomass boiler, to the different industrial processes/applications that require heat.

The heating of the thermal oil takes place through the heat generated by the combustion of the biomass in the furnace of the boiler, or of the fuel (natural gas, oil, fuel oil, etc.) in the burner. This heat is transmitted to the coils located inside the boiler, through which the thermal oil circulates.

The coils of the industrial boiler, where the thermal oil will circulate, must be designed and constructed in accordance with the regulations, dimensions and quality necessary so that, in addition resisting the high temperatures to which the thermal oil will be subjected, they allow an optimum speed for proper heat transfer. The aforementioned qualities will not only extend the lifespan of the thermal oil, but also of the industrial boiler and other equipment involved in the heat generation process. That is why, for this type of thermal oil heating processes, we recommend the configuration of water tube coils which, in addition to preventing excessive thermal oil degradation, speed up start-stop processes, avoiding the instantaneous evaporation process, among other problems and deterioration.

Thermal oil is characterized by being a heat transfer medium of great versatility, that is, it can cover the specific needs of a wide variety of industrial sectors. Here are some of the main technical characteristics of thermal oil.

  • High temperatures (Up to 400 ° C in liquid phase) with minimum atmospheric pressures, which simplifies the design of the installation
  • Absence of corrosion (the fluid lubricates the installation)
  • High thermal inertia (the system retains the heat for longer)
  • Long life of the equipment (More than 20 years with standard maintenance and no need for major renovations)
  • Non-pressurized system
  • Low pressure design
  • Proportionally reduced CO2 and NOx emissions
  • Mixed temperatures that can be easily reached by different users in a single system.
  • Simpler civil works due to low pressure operation
